Garage Storage With Adjustable Shelving
Are you unable to pull your car into your garage because there are too many things in the way? Are there boxes and bins everywhere, that you trip over? Is the ice chest too inaccessible? Do you have trouble finding a screwdriver, a garden clipper, or sandpaper when you need it? Are there more things on the floor, than on the walls? Do you wish you knew what was in all those containers? Would you like to be able to See What You Have, in your garage?
No matter how full or how disorganized your garage may be, I can come up with a vision that:
- will set up a customized system based on your specific storage needs
- will let you use your space more efficiently, and
- will let you See What You Have, whether it is garden tools, workshop equipment, pet supplies, or any other garage items.

See below for a garage that needed my storage redesign skills. There was stuff all over the floor, including some things that needed to be accessed often, and other things that had to be kept but didn’t have to be in the way. See that big unused blank wall? That empty wall gave me some prime real estate, for an organizing solution that could be customized for this client.
Sometimes, free-standing shelving units will solve the problem of getting things off of the floor. However, in many cases, adjustable shelving is the best solution, so that the layout can be customized to your particular items. When I need adjustable shelving, I turn to Elfa shelving from The Container Store, because it’s very strong and can hold lots of heavy items, it’s easy to install, and best of all, it’s easy to change around as your needs change.
See the long tall narrow cardboard boxes, standing up on their ends? Those were leftover trim pieces from cabinetry that the client wanted to keep.
However, they would not need to be accessed frequently. So those long narrow boxes went up on higher shelves, to get them out of the way. Storing them horizontally instead of vertically freed up space below for items needed more often.
Since the Elfa shelving is fully adjustable, I was able to set those shelves closer together. Some of the cardboard containers were round, so I used bracket posts to keep the boxes in place. The bracket posts are the L-shaped pieces coming up in front of each shelf. You can see them better in the picture below.
You might also notice, in the close-up picture below, that there is a circuit breaker box on the wall. It’s important not to block access to the circuit breaker box. See how the shelf just above it is positioned just high enough so that the door to the box can open easily? You would not want to have to take everything down off of the wall, just to be able to open that little door. This is a case where those little details can affect the usability of a space, and that is one of the things I love about this kind of work!

Now, the floor is clear for items that are used often. The stroller has its own spot, with enough empty space next to it to maneuver it in and out. The finished storage wall in the garage used the available space to maximum efficiency! Can I work wonders with your garage?
