Saying Goodbye To Clothes

I’m going to say something that you might not believe right away. Get your coffee, sit down right here, and give me a chance to persuade you. Here it is: There is NO SHAME in getting rid of perfectly good clothes and shoes that you simply don’t wear.

Do you have clothes and shoes that you are not wearing? We all do. Sometimes you try them on, and then you decide not to wear them, because they don’t fit quite right, or the color kind of makes you look ill, or they make you look [fill in the blank] and you don’t like looking [fill in the blank].

I know what you’re thinking. It’s true that you spent good money on them. You bought them for a reason, and either they were expensive, or you got them at a killer sale price, right? Money was invested, one way or another. (Ever notice how reproachful George Washington looks on that dollar bill? It’s only a dollar, George. Chill.)

money

But think about it this way – that money is already Spent. Gone. Kaput. And here’s the thing. The money is gone, whether the clothes stay in your closet and dresser, or not. Keeping those clothes, when you will never wear them for various reasons, doesn’t do anything to bring that money back.

Instead, those clothes make you keep on paying a cost, in terms of drawers that are too packed full and have to be rummaged through to find wearable things, and a closet so full that you have to shove hangers out of the way to get something, and frustration and wasted time in the morning trying to find something to wear. You keep paying for those clothes, over and over again.

And, here’s another thing to think about. If you keep those clothes and shoes, then not only can YOU not wear them, but NOBODY ELSE can, either.

Clothes never worn, donated

  • money is spent and gone
  • more space in your closet for the clothes that you do wear
  • time saved by being able to quickly choose clothes to wear
  • you can See What You Have
  • other people can happily wear that blouse, or that skirt, or those shoes

Clothes never worn, kept

  • money is still spent and gone
  • not enough space in your closet to see the clothes that you do wear
  • time wasted from struggling to find clothes that you can wear
  • you can’t see how many white sweaters or black pants you already own
  • absolutely nobody is wearing that blouse, or that skirt, or those shoes

The only consequence that remains the same with the two scenarios is the money. All of the other consequences are quite different. Something to think about, the next time you struggle with getting dressed in the morning. Can I help you get your closet cleaned out this weekend?
