Keeping Networking Contacts Organized With Evernote

I’ve been joining some networking groups lately, including Fabulous Working Ladies, which is about to get launched nationwide! They have a Fan Page Friday on their Facebook page, where we can all post our Pages, get “Likes” from each other, and learn about each others businesses.

I am so grateful for getting so much interest for my Facebook Page from these new connections and friends, but it has created a new problem. I don’t know about you, but with a lot of new names adding up fast, I can’t quickly memorize which name goes with which business, you know? And that’s the kind of information I want to have at my fingertips, to start learning people’s businesses and developing those relationships and friendships. I have a free tip on how to do just that, and it’s called Evernote.

Evernote

Evernote is a free app for your computer that syncs with your smartphone. Their slogan is “Remember everything.” My favorite thing about Evernote is the powerful search engine within it, so that you DON’T have to remember everything. IT can remember everything FOR you. Evernote has become my own private, personalized, customized Google, for every scrap of information that I have stashed in it. All of it will be search-able with any keyword.

All those things that we jot down on Post It notes? I may first write it down on paper, but then I enter it into Evernote, and throw away the paper note. Then I can search for anything with just a keyword.

My friends who have not drunk the Evernote koolaid yet don’t quite get why I love Evernote so much. It has become my second brain. I use it in my work to collect pictures of organizing products from the internet to show to my clients, and I use it for personal things like home decor ideas, lists of books I want to read, funny things on the internet I’ll want to find again later to show friends, ideas for gifts for family and friends; the list goes on.

So, back to Facebook.

Who Are All These People? And Do They Have the Winery Or The Salon Or The Real Estate Business?

For managing and organizing my Facebook Likes, I have created a notebook (Evernote’s version of a “folder”) with two notes in it:

  • one note is a list of FB Business Pages that I have Liked, so those are mostly business names
  • the other note is a list of people that have liked my Facebook Page, and those are usually individual’s names. (See the footnote below for more about that.)

I need to have two separate notes for these, because while there is a lot of overlap between the two, the lists are not identical.

Then, I can search for that person/business on Facebook, and match up the person’s name with their business. I enter that info into my Evernote lists. (I do this on both the individual name list, and on the business name list, so that the names are cross-indexed, and just because connecting them on both lists helps me start remembering who is who.)

She Must Have A Great Memory! Or Else She Must Be Really Organized!

Now, when that person comments on my business page, or when I see them across the room at a networking event, I can instantly search for their name in my Evernote lists. Since I’ve cross-indexed the name with the business, I can “remember” exactly who that person is and what their business is called.

Then, I can seem to be Quite Brilliant when I say, Hi Mary, how’s your More Time, Inc. business going?

Footnote – How To Find Out Who Has Hit The Like Button On Your Business Page

Facebook currently doesn’t make it easy to find out who has Liked your business page. I can’t even find these instructions on their Help page, so here goes:

First, you have to go to your page, and click “Use Facebook as [Your Page Name]” on the upper right side. Then on the upper left side, find the hard-to-see dark blue icon next to the word “facebook.” Click that, and a drop down menu will show the most recent Likes. Click “See All” at the bottom of the drop down list, and you can see all the individual names.

Clicking “See All” will also give you a now-suddenly-visible drop down menu up at the top of the list, that says People. Click that, and you’ll see an option for Pages, to see which business pages have Liked your page.

(By the way, I just discovered this recently – if people Like your Page as [Their Business Page] instead of as [Their Personal Name], you won’t get notified, and their Like won’t get added to your existing Likes. So the “See All” —>“Pages” drop down is the only way, currently, to find out if a business page likes your page.)
